MADEX 2025: What Is the International Maritime Defense Industry Exhibition?
MADEX, the International Maritime Defense Industry Exhibition, is one of Asia's leading maritime defense trade shows, jointly hosted by the Republic of Korea Navy and the Defense Acquisition Program Administration. Held biennially at BEXCO in Busan, the exhibition covers the full maritime defense value chain, including naval vessels, submarines, unmanned surface vessels, maritime sensors, combat systems, and naval weapons.
Under the Bangladesh Navy's "Forces Goal 2030" modernization agenda, the country is pursuing additional frigates, patrol vessels, submarines, and coastal security craft. Korean shipbuilding and defense firms such as HD Korea Motors, Korea Hanwha Ocean, and LIG Nex1 can use MADEX as a direct platform to engage Bangladesh Navy decision-makers and position themselves for upcoming procurement discussions.

Export Strategy for the Bangladesh Maritime Defense Market
01
Expand Frigate and Patrol Vessel Exports
Korea already has a reference case in Bangladesh through patrol vessel exports, and additional frigate projects remain under discussion. Frigates in the 1,500-3,000 ton class offered by HD Korea Motors and Korea Hanwha Ocean align well with Bangladesh Navy requirements for coastal defense, anti-ship capability, and anti-submarine operations. MADEX provides a practical venue for specification and pricing discussions with the Bangladesh delegation.
02
Offer Combat System Packages
Rather than proposing hulls alone, Korean firms should package combat management systems, radar, sonar, and fire control solutions together. CMS platforms from Korea Systems and LIG Nex1 have operational credibility within the Korean Navy and can be positioned as part of Bangladesh Navy C4I modernization. Integration capability will likely be decisive in major awards.
03
Lead with Unmanned Maritime Systems
Bangladesh is reviewing unmanned systems for maritime surveillance and mine countermeasure roles. Korean USV and UUV technologies can be demonstrated at MADEX and may appeal because they improve surveillance efficiency at comparatively manageable cost levels, an important factor for Bangladesh procurement planning.
04
Pursue G2G Defense Cooperation MOUs
The exhibition period can be used to advance government-to-government defense cooperation between Korea and Bangladesh. G2G arrangements often offer a more viable path than open commercial tendering, and financing structures linked to Korea EDCF loans can reduce Bangladesh's fiscal burden on large-scale procurements.
05
Include Technology Transfer and Local MRO
Bangladesh typically expects technology transfer and domestic maintenance capability when acquiring defense assets. Korean contractors should differentiate themselves from Chinese and Turkish competitors by proposing MRO partnerships with Chittagong shipyards and training programs for Bangladesh Navy technical personnel.

MOU and LOI discussion
MADEX 2025 should be viewed as a strategic platform for shaping the next phase of Bangladesh Navy modernization partnerships. Korean shipbuilding and defense suppliers can strengthen their position against Chinese and Turkish competitors by combining frigates, combat systems, and unmanned maritime platforms with G2G cooperation and EDCF-linked financing structures.
