Bhola Bridge: Bangladesh's Largest Island-Connection Project
Bhola, located in the Meghna estuary in southern Bangladesh, is the country's largest island and home to more than 2 million people. Yet it still lacks a fixed bridge link to the mainland and depends largely on ferry transport. The Bhola Bridge project aims to connect Bhola Island with the mainland in the Barisal Division through a major bridge, materially improving both economic access in the southern coastal belt and disaster evacuation connectivity.
Building on the successful completion of the Padma Bridge in 2022, the Bangladeshi government is positioning Bhola Bridge as its next large-scale signature bridge project. The feasibility study is nearing completion, and the project is expected to move forward with financing from the ADB or the World Bank.
Key Findings from the Feasibility Study
The Bhola Bridge feasibility study reviews the bridge structure itself, approach roads, river-crossing structures, and environmental impacts as one integrated package. The Meghna estuary features significant depth variation and strong currents, meaning some parts of the corridor are technically more challenging than the Padma Bridge alignment.

Bhola Bridge is shaping up as Bangladesh's next large-scale bridge project after the Padma Bridge, with an expected investment size of roughly USD 1.5-2.0 billion. If the project proceeds under an MDB-funded ICB structure, Korean contractors will have a clear competitive case built on long-span bridge delivery capability and MDB tender experience. The key is to start PQ preparation and local JV selection before the procurement process formally begins.
