Embassy K-Food Cultural Exchange Event: Promoting Korean Cuisine in Bangladesh

Overview of the Embassy's K-Food Cultural Exchange Event

The Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Bangladesh regularly hosts cultural exchange events to promote Korean cuisine, or K-Food. These programs are designed to introduce Korean food culture to Bangladeshi audiences while laying the groundwork for exports of Korean ingredients and processed food products. In a market where more than 90% of the population is Muslim, developing and promoting halal-certified Korean menu items is a central strategic priority.

The 2025 K-Food cultural exchange program is scheduled to be held four times during the year, led by the Korean Embassy in Dhaka with support from KOTRA and the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (aT). The format combines cooking demonstrations, tasting sessions, Korean food exhibitions, and buyer consultations, targeting both Bangladeshi consumers and the local food distribution industry. The 2024 edition drew more than 2,000 participants and reportedly resulted in 15 export agreements for Korean food products.

Program Structure

The K-Food cultural exchange event is organized around five program pillars: Korean food demonstrations, tasting experiences, Korean food exhibitions, one-on-one buyer meetings, and cultural performances. During the cooking demonstrations, Korean chefs prepare dishes live on site and introduce halal-adapted Korean recipes. In the tasting zone, visitors can sample a wide range of dishes including bibimbap, bulgogi, kimchi, and tteokbokki at no cost.

Halal-certified menu development is one of the most important conditions for K-Food market entry in Bangladesh. Traditional Korean recipes that rely on pork or alcohol-based ingredients must be reformulated with halal substitutes and certified either by the Korea Muslim Federation (KMF) or a recognized Bangladeshi halal authority. Bibimbap is widely regarded as one of the best-fit menu items for Bangladeshi consumers because it combines beef with fresh vegetables in a familiar rice-based format. Bulgogi also performs well thanks to its sweet marinade profile, while kimchi has drawn favorable reactions because Bangladesh already has some cultural familiarity with fermented foods.

Export Linkage Opportunities for K-Food

01
Korean instant noodles: one of the strongest demand segments
Bangladesh is among the world's largest instant noodle markets, with annual consumption exceeding 3 billion units. Korean ramen is increasingly positioned as a premium product alongside the popularity of Korean dramas, and halal-certified noodles from Nongshim, Samyang, and Ottogi are already distributed through local importers. Buyer consultations during K-Food events can therefore translate directly into volume export contracts.
02
Korean sauces and condiments: gochujang and soy sauce export potential
Core Korean condiments such as gochujang, soy sauce, and doenjang can enter Bangladesh once halal certification is secured. Halal-certified sauce portfolios from companies such as 코리아CJ CheilJedang, Daesang, and Ottogi can be showcased and sampled at K-Food events, then linked to supply agreements with local restaurants and hotels. Gochujang is especially promising because it aligns well with Bangladeshi preferences for spicy flavors.
03
Korean seaweed products: positioned within health-food demand
Korean laver products, including seasoned seaweed and seaweed snacks, are gaining traction among Bangladesh's middle class as healthy snack options. Sampling programs at K-Food events create awareness among local consumers and can support follow-on sales through e-commerce and modern retail channels such as Daraz and Chaldal.
04
Korean beverages: yuja tea, sikhye, and aloe drinks
Traditional Korean beverages such as yuja tea, sikhye, and aloe drinks are naturally aligned with halal requirements as non-alcoholic offerings. Bangladesh's hot and humid climate supports demand for refreshing beverage categories, and tasting sessions have reportedly generated positive consumer feedback. This opens room for distribution expansion by brands such as Kwangdong, Woongjin, and HiteJinro Beverage.

The K-Food cultural exchange program is one of the most effective channels for giving Bangladeshi consumers direct exposure to the taste of Korean cuisine and the quality of Korean food products. Success in a Muslim-majority market depends first on credible halal compliance, followed by careful menu selection that reflects local taste preferences, including dishes such as bibimbap, bulgogi, and instant noodles. In practical terms, the most effective strategy is a two-track approach that raises consumer awareness through hands-on experiences while converting buyer meetings into concrete export agreements.
