2020 Bangladesh Economic Zone (SEZ) Overview
This article presents a comprehensive review of Bangladesh' 2020 economic zone (SEZ, Special Economic Zone) development. Bangladesh set a target of creating 100 zones under BEZA (Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority), incorporating 8 existing EPZs managed by BEPZA and expanding industrial infrastructure at scale.
Economic zones offer the most attractive location for Korean manufacturing entry into Bangladesh. Tax holidays for 10 years, duty-free import of production inputs, one-stop government services, and infrastructure support (power, roads, water) are provided inside each zone.

01
Choosing SEZ vs EPZ
Companies with export intensity above 80% should prioritize BEPZA EPZ. Firms with mixed domestic and export sales are usually better matched with BEZA SEZ. EPZs generally provide higher infrastructure readiness and faster start-up, while BEZA zones offer more land for large-scale manufacturing. Korean firms have shown strongest interest in Chittagong EPZ for textiles/electronics and Mirsharai SEZ for broader manufacturing.
02
Admission Process and Timeline
The standard sequence is BEZA/BEPZA application, review, approval, land lease, factory construction, then production launch. Typical timelines are 3-6 months for BEPZA EPZ and 6-12 months for BEZA SEZ. It is most efficient to complete BIDA investment registration before submitting the zone application.
03
Using Incentives
Zone entrants can claim 10-year corporate income tax exemption, duty exemption on imported materials and components, dividend tax exemptions for foreign investors, and VAT exemption on exports. Additional benefits include long-term land lease (30-50 years), dedicated electricity and water supply, and one-stop administrative support.
04
Risk Management
Before investing, Korean firms should evaluate infrastructure readiness (power, roads, water), workforce availability, port access, and political stability. For zones still under development, infrastructure delay remains a key execution risk, so phase-one completion status should be a primary selection criterion.
