Bangladesh Urbanization and Smart City Analysis: From Dhaka Megacity to Satellite Cities

Bangladesh Urbanization Overview

Bangladesh's urbanization rate stands at 40% (2025) and is projected to reach 50% by 2030. Dhaka, the capital, is a megacity of 22 million people — ranked seventh globally by population — and one of the world's most densely populated cities at 47,400 people per square kilometer. An estimated 400,000–500,000 people migrate from rural areas to Dhaka annually, intensifying chronic traffic congestion, housing shortages, air pollution, and water resource stress.

To relieve Dhaka's overcrowding, the government is developing satellite cities — including Purbachal New Town, Gazipur, and Narayanganj industrial cities. In parallel, the "Smart Bangladesh 2041" vision is driving smart city projects to digitally transform transportation, energy, public safety, and government services. Korea's Sejong City and Songdo smart city models are the most frequently cited benchmarks that Bangladesh aspires to replicate.

Smart City Projects Overview

Bangladesh is advancing more than eight smart city projects centered on Dhaka. Core initiatives include the Dhaka Metro Rail (MRT), elevated expressways, ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems), smart water management, and e-government services — with Japan (JICA), Korea (KOICA), and ADB as primary financing partners.

Korean Urban and Transportation Technology Export Opportunities

01
Urban Rail and Transit Systems
Dhaka MRT Lines 2–5 expansion is planned — procurement tenders for rolling stock, signaling, communications, and AFC (Automatic Fare Collection) systems. Korean companies have strong competitiveness: Korea Rotem (rolling stock), Woojin Industrial Systems (signaling), Korea CNS (AFC). Dhaka BRT electric bus introduction plans create additional Korean EV bus export opportunities.
02
ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems)
Dhaka traffic congestion costs 2.5% of GDP annually — ITS demand is urgent. Korean companies are participating in KOICA-supported Dhaka ITS projects. Integrated solutions covering CCTV, signal control, VMS, and ATMS are in demand. Korea SDS and Korea CNS ITS technology are well-positioned for export.
03
Satellite Cities and Urban Planning
Purbachal Satellite City (planned population 500,000) is benchmarking Korea's Sejong City and Pangyo models. Integrated masterplan, water supply and sewerage, power, and transportation system design opportunities. KOICA-Korea Land and Housing Corporation overseas project linkage is feasible.
04
Air Quality and Environmental Management
Dhaka PM2.5 at 6× WHO standard — strong demand for air quality monitoring and fine dust reduction solutions. Korea Ministry of Environment air quality management technology export. Urban greening, vertical garden walls, and rooftop garden technology. ADB Dhaka air quality improvement project participation opportunities.
05
Smart Buildings and Energy
Dhaka is moving to mandate smart building standards for new commercial construction. BEMS (Building Energy Management Systems), smart lighting, and HVAC optimization are core requirements. Korea C&T and 코리아디스플레이 Electronics smart building solutions. Net-zero building pilot application in satellite cities is a near-term opportunity.

Bangladesh's urbanization presents a dual reality: the crisis of a 22-million-person Dhaka losing 2.5% of GDP to traffic congestion, and the enormous opportunity it creates. Metro rail, BRT, ITS, and satellite city projects are being pursued in rapid succession, with Korea's Sejong City and Songdo smart city experience recognized as the most directly relevant benchmarks. Korean companies in the urban, transport, and environmental sectors can become core partners in Bangladesh's smart city revolution through KOICA ODA linkage and PPP participation.
