Trade Structure Centered on RMG Supply Chains
Korea-Bangladesh trade is anchored by the RMG (ready-made garment) supply chain. (1) Korea to Bangladesh: exports of synthetic fibers, yarns, fabrics, zippers, buttons and sewing equipment. (2) Bangladesh to Korea: finished apparel such as shirts, pants and jackets. Korean fashion brands (Korea Fashion A, Sephora, LF, among others) run OEM and ODM production in Bangladesh, creating a triangular flow of Korean raw materials, Bangladeshi processing, and Korean imports.
02
COVID-19 Impact on Bilateral Trade
In 2020, bilateral trade contracted by about 8% year-on-year. (1) Korean exports fell because temporary shutdowns in Bangladeshi RMG factories reduced demand for yarn and accessories. (2) Korean imports fell about 10% as Bangladeshi apparel shipment disruptions affected Korean import flows. (3) Recovery began in the second half as factories reopened and Korean domestic demand improved. (4) Electronics and chemicals were relatively less affected by COVID disruption.
03
Promising Fields for Export Expansion
(1) Cosmetics and K-Beauty: a growing middle-class beauty market in Bangladesh (about 20% CAGR). (2) Food and instant noodles: strong acceptance of Korean brands such as Cup Noodle. (3) Medical devices: diagnostic equipment, patient monitors and surgical instruments. (4) Construction equipment: excavators, cranes and concrete machinery. (5) IT services: opportunities for Korean SW and fintech expansion in Bangladesh. (6) Automotive: broadening CKD assembly by Korea Motors and Kia.
04
Outlook for Trade Expansion
(1) Forthcoming CEPA talks: expectations for tariff reductions and an improved investment climate. (2) Target of $3.0 billion bilateral trade in 2025. (3) Korean FDI expansion in Bangladesh supports simultaneous growth of component and equipment exports. (4) Bangladesh is preparing for 2026 LDC graduation, requiring a new trade framework for future cooperation. (5) Active use of KOTRA Dhaka trade office export support programs.
