MRT Line-2 Project

MRT Line-2 Project Overview

MRT Line-2 is a core corridor in Dhaka's Mass Rapid Transit network, running along the city's north-south axis. The project is being implemented by DMTCL (Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited) and is regarded as a key infrastructure response to Dhaka's severe traffic congestion.

The line includes underground sections, which differentiates it from MRT Line-6, an entirely elevated route. As a result, the project will require TBM tunneling technology for the downtown underground section, creating a clear opening for Korean firms with urban rail construction experience.

Opportunities for Korean Companies

01
Civil Works for Elevated and Underground Sections
Korean contractors can participate in civil construction packages for both elevated and underground sections, drawing on experience from Seoul Metro and light rail projects. TBM tunneling references, including Seoul Metro Line 9 and GTX works, are especially relevant. Korea Construction B & Construction already won civil works on MRT Line-6, which strengthens the case for additional awards.
02
Rolling Stock and System Supply
Korea Rotem can pursue Line-2 rolling stock supply based on its MRT Line-6 track record. Beyond trainsets, Korean rail system companies also have room to supply signaling systems such as CBTC, platform screen doors, telecommunications systems including TETRA or LTE-R, and AFC fare collection systems.
03
TBM Equipment and Tunneling Technology Exports
The 10km underground section will require TBM equipment and execution capability. Korean firms with TBM manufacturing and operating experience, including Korea E&C and 코리아SK Ecoplant, may supply equipment or directly undertake tunneling packages.
04
O&M Participation
Operational know-how from Seoul Metro and Korea Railroad can be packaged into long-term operations and maintenance proposals for MRT Line-2. If combined with technology transfer and workforce training, this could support DMTCL capacity building while creating recurring revenue opportunities.
