Bangladesh EdTech 2020: Online Education Market and Digital Learning Innovation

Bangladesh EdTech 2020 Overview

When COVID-19 prevented 42 million Bangladeshi students from attending school in 2020, the edtech market grew explosively. Online learning platform users increased fivefold, and the government urgently deployed remote education through Sangsad TV and online portals. The edtech market size is estimated at approximately $150M, with 35% annual growth projected to reach $660M by 2025.

Local platforms such as 10 Minute School and Shikho grew rapidly, with structural demand rising in IT freelancer development (LEDP), EPS Korean language education, and STEM fields. Korean edtech firms including Riiid, CLASS101, and Enuma are evaluating market entry through Bengali localization and KOICA ODA linkages.

Major EdTech Platforms

10 Minute School has grown into Bangladesh's largest edtech platform, competing with Shikho, Bohubrihi, and the government-backed Muktopaath. Niche platforms are also emerging in vocational training, STEM education, and English and Korean language learning. Post-COVID competition among platforms has intensified, accelerating differentiation.

Government Response and Digital Education Policy

The Ministry of Education responded to COVID-19 by deploying Sangsad TV educational broadcasts, an online exam platform, and teacher ICT capacity-building programs. However, the digital divide in internet and device access for rural students remains a serious challenge — partly mitigated by the government's zero-rating policy.

Government EdTech Response
Sangsad TV6 hours of educational broadcasting daily — all K-12 subjects
Online ExamsUniversity remote exam pilot — 40 universities covered
Teacher ICT50,000 digital education completions
Free DataEducation site zero-rating — 60M students benefiting

Vocational Training and STEM Education

Growing IT workforce demand has caused a sharp rise in demand for coding, data analytics, and digital marketing vocational training. The government's Learning and Earning Development Project (LEDP) supports IT freelancer development, and STEM education strengthening is also underway. EPS (Employment Permit System) Korean language learning demand has also grown to 50,000+ learners per year.

01
IT Vocational Training
The LEDP project targets developing 50,000 IT freelancers to generate $500M+ in online income. Bangladeshi freelancers on global platforms such as Upwork and Fiverr rank second only to India in number.
02
Coding and Bootcamp Education
Private bootcamp providers such as Cefalo, Kite, and BrainStation train developers in 6–12 week intensive programs. Graduate employment rates exceed 80%, with monthly salaries of $300–500 — becoming a vehicle of economic mobility for rural youth.
03
STEM Education Strengthening
Robotics clubs and expanded participation in international mathematics and science olympiads are developing science and engineering talent. In 2020, the Bangladesh team achieved a top-30% result at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).
04
Korean and English Language Education
Demand for Korean language learning for EPS-TOPIK qualification reaches 50,000+ learners per year. Driven by Korean immigration and employment demand, a market is forming for Korean online platforms, AI tutors, and Bangladeshi Korean-language textbooks.
05
Adult and Lifelong Learning
Growing demand for workplace upskilling and reskilling is expanding evening and weekend online courses. IT and management capacity programs for garment factory supervisors and SME digital transformation training are forming new market segments.
