What Is a Digital Thread? Connecting Data Across Export Consultations
A Digital Thread originated in manufacturing as a way to connect lifecycle data from design and production to distribution and service without interruption. KOTRA's DX Innovation Lab adapted this concept to export consultations, building a system that links data across buyer discovery, pre-meeting research, consultation, contracting, and post-meeting follow-up through a single digital thread.
Traditional export consultation events were fragmented, with each stage operating in isolation. Buyer discovery systems, consultation management tools, and performance tracking platforms ran separately, causing context to be lost and follow-up management to become inefficient. The Digital Thread integrates every step into one consistent data flow.
The Digital Thread 7-Stage Architecture
The Digital Thread for export consultations is structured around seven stages, with the data created in each stage automatically flowing into the next. This preserves the full context of every consultation and ensures that decisions at each stage are grounded in the data accumulated previously.
Data Continuity: Preserving Consultation Context Without Gaps
The core value of the Digital Thread is data continuity. In the past, consultation events often ended with only a few meeting notes. In a Digital Thread system, however, every touchpoint with the buyer is recorded and connected. That makes it possible to carry the full context forward into second and third consultations without disruption.

Implementation Impact and the Bangladesh Pilot
Export consultations using the Digital Thread improved follow-up conversion rates by 45% compared with the previous approach, while the average time to first follow-up contact fell from five days to one day. In Bangladesh, the model was piloted in Korea-Bangladesh export consultation programs run by the KOTRA Dhaka Trade Office.
