Infrastructure Roadshow 2025: BBA Bangladesh Bridge Authority Project Presentation

BBA: Bangladesh Bridge Authority Infrastructure Roadshow 2025 Presentation

The Bangladesh Bridge Authority (BBA) is the government agency responsible for constructing and managing large-scale bridges in Bangladesh. The BBA presentation at Infrastructure Roadshow 2025 covered plans to build 12 new major bridges following the Padma Bridge, repair and reinforce more than 200 aging bridges, and introduce Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems.

Bangladesh is a country crossed by more than 700 rivers, making river-crossing infrastructure central to economic connectivity. Following the opening of the Padma Bridge (6.15 km) in 2022, the government announced plans to invest more than $5 billion in bridge infrastructure by 2030.

12 New Major Bridge Project Pipeline

Building on the success of the Padma Bridge, the BBA is advancing 12 new major bridge projects. These include crossings of major rivers including the Meghna, Jamuna, and Surma, with multilateral financing from ADB, the World Bank, JICA, and EDCF.

Bridge Repair, Reinforcement, and SHM Introduction Program

The BBA is advancing a repair and reinforcement program for more than 200 aging bridges, including Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system installation, seismic retrofitting, and deck pavement replacement. This represents a significant export opportunity for Korean bridge maintenance technology and IoT-based monitoring systems.

01
Structural Health Monitoring (SHM)
Sensors installed on key bridges enable real-time monitoring of displacement, stress, and vibration. Korean IoT-based SHM technology is well-suited for this program; pilot application on the Padma Bridge is under consideration. Annual monitoring budgets exceeding $5M point to sustained, long-term demand.
02
Seismic Retrofitting
A seismic reinforcement program targeting bridges in earthquake-prone zones. Includes Lead Rubber Bearing (LRB) installation and bearing device replacement, covering 50 bridges at an estimated $120M. Korean seismic engineering expertise and proven track record offer strong competitiveness.
03
Deck Pavement and Waterproofing
Deck pavement replacement and waterproofing program for 200+ bridges. Annual recurring demand of approximately $30M is expected. Korean high-performance bridge deck waterproofing materials and MMA paving technology are well-suited for this segment.
04
Smart Bridge Lighting and Safety Equipment
Program to install LED lighting, safety railings, and CCTV on bridges. Building on the success of the Padma Bridge lighting system, expansion to all new and existing bridges is planned. Korean smart lighting and safety equipment firms can participate via direct export or ODA-linked programs.

Korean Firm Entry Strategy

Project Monitoring
Regularly check BBA and MDB procurement notices; register for alerts through the KOTRA Dhaka Trade Center
Secure Local JV Partner
Form a joint venture with a Bangladeshi construction or engineering firm
Pre-Qualification (PQ)
Meet minimum performance and technical requirements per ICB regulations; prepare all documentation in English
Technical and Price Bid
Comply with procurement rules for each financing source (ADB, JICA, EDCF); include a localization plan
Construction and Technology Transfer
Execute bridge construction and SHM installation; operate local technician training and education programs

The BBA's bridge investment plans are expected to proceed without disruption, aligned with the interim government's infrastructure-first policy stance. The Meghna Bridge 2 (ADB) and Jamuna Railway Bridge (JICA) — both with confirmed financing — are expected to go to bid in 2025–2026, making early pre-qualification (PQ) preparation critical.
