Bangladesh Agro-Processing Industry 2020: Food Demand and Export Potential

Bangladesh Agro-Processing Industry Overview

Bangladesh has a large domestic food market supported by a population of 170 million and abundant agricultural output. In 2020, the agro-processing market was valued at roughly $12 billion, accounting for about 4% of GDP. Rice, vegetables, fruits, spices, dairy, and bakery are key sub-sectors, while Pran-RFL, Square Food, ACME, and City Group lead the industry. Because processed-volume shares remain only 2 to 3%, growth potential is still significant.

01
Cold Chain Infrastructure Gaps
The biggest challenge is weak cold-chain infrastructure. Post-harvest losses remain around 30–40% for fruits and vegetables and 20–25% for fish. National refrigerated storage capacity is roughly 1.5 million tons, only about 20% of estimated need. Cold-chain transport outside Dhaka is particularly limited. The government is pursuing ADB and World Bank financing to add 500 cold-storage sites by 2025.
02
Covid-19 Impact on Food Industry
In 2020, the pandemic had mixed effects. Positive: home consumption rose, driving stronger demand for noodles, snacks, frozen foods, and beverages (+15~20%). Negative: fewer dining-out channels and logistics disruptions made raw-material procurement difficult. Large groups like Pran and Square posted record sales, while many smaller processors suffered from distribution bottlenecks.
03
Export and Cooperation Opportunities for Korean Firms
Priority opportunities: (1) food machinery such as filling, sealing, sterilizing, drying, and packaging systems, estimated demand around $500M in imports; (2) cold-storage and cold-chain equipment including freezers and reefer vehicles; (3) food packaging materials such as retort pouches, aseptic packaging, and MAP packaging; (4) food additives including emulsifiers, thickeners, flavors, and colorants; (5) noodle and bakery technology with options for Korean OEM licensing; (6) quality certification support for HACCP, ISO 22000, and BRCGS.
04
Market Outlook
If processing rate rises from 2~3% to 10% by 2030 (near India levels), the market could quadruple. Export expansion to Africa and the Middle East under the Pran model is projected to target $2B. Supermarket expansion is expected to support modern retail demand, while incentives such as five-year corporate tax holidays and a 20% export cash incentive could strengthen competitiveness.

Bangladesh's agro-processing sector remains at an early stage with only 2~3% processing penetration, but it has strong demand from the 170 million domestic market and export expansion. Korean firms can find opportunities in food machinery, refrigeration equipment, packaging materials, and food additives, especially as cold-chain projects and food safety certification requirements continue to grow.
