Bangladesh Frozen Food Exports 2020: Shrimp and Seafood Market with HACCP Certification Review

Bangladesh Frozen Food Export Overview

Bangladesh's frozen food exports are still dominated by shrimp. In 2020, total frozen food exports were roughly USD 450 million, a decrease from levels above USD 700 million in earlier periods. Black tiger shrimp (Bagda) and whiteleg shrimp (Vannamei) remain the core products, while farming and processing are concentrated in Khulna, Satkhira, and Cox's Bazar. EU, the United States, and Japan are the three largest markets, with HACCP, BRC, and EU approvals becoming mandatory for export.

The decline of black tiger shrimp exports (-15%) is linked to disease episodes such as EMS (Early Mortality Syndrome) and weaker pricing competitiveness. In contrast, Whiteleg shrimp rose 10% as intensive aquaculture practices expanded, and the government is actively promoting whiteleg cultivation.

01
EU food-safety approvals and export barriers
EU is Bangladesh's largest shrimp market (40%), where FVO (Food and Veterinary Office) pre-approval is required. In 2020, 70 Bangladeshi processing plants held EU approvals, and HACCP, BRC, and IFS certifications were essential. EU import alerts over antibiotic residues in 2009–2010 led to strengthened residue controls by DOF, and Korean imports also face Korea MFDS residue tests.
02
COVID-19 and export contraction
The 2020 pandemic reduced frozen food exports by around 10% year on year. Restaurant closures in the EU and U.S. reduced foodservice demand, while household retail demand remained slightly positive. Air-cargo disruptions pushed logistics costs up by about 30%, and factory utilization stayed around 60–70% due to distancing measures. Frozen crab performed better (+12%) as Chinese demand recovered.
03
Korean company import and collaboration opportunities
(1) Shrimp imports: Korean retail chains and foodservice can source black tiger and whiteleg shrimp from Bangladesh. 2020 Bangladesh-to-Korea shrimp imports were roughly USD 5 million. (2) Cold-chain equipment: freezers, quick-freezing systems, and refrigerated transport. (3) Aquaculture technology: intensive whiteleg technology, feed optimization, water-quality management systems. (4) Seafood processing machinery: shelling, grading, packaging equipment. (5) HACCP consulting: market for Bangladeshi firms seeking food-safety system implementation with Korean expertise.
04
Outlook
(1) Faster whiteleg transition: government target of 300,000 tons by 2025. (2) Higher value-added products: cooked shrimp and shrimp snacks. (3) Modernizing farming: cluster aquaculture and IoT water-quality monitoring. (4) New market entry: expanding to China, Korea, and the Gulf. (5) Structural constraint: higher cyclone and sea-level risks are increasing farm damage.
