Bangladesh Plastic Industry 2020: Domestic Growth and Resin Import Analysis

Bangladesh Plastic Industry Overview

The plastic industry in Bangladesh has been one of the fastest-growing domestic-oriented sectors, with the market size estimated at around $400 million in 2020. Per-capita plastic consumption was only 5kg in 2020, far below India (11kg) and China (45kg), indicating substantial long-term growth potential. The sector relies on imported resin for 95% of demand, with Korea, Saudi Arabia, and Thailand as major suppliers. Roughly 5,000 SMEs are active, and firms such as RFL, Pran-RFL, and Bengal Plastics are among the key players.

01
RMG packaging and industrial linkage
Ready-made garments (RMG) remains Bangladesh's largest sector and is the biggest domestic user of plastic packaging. Roughly $500 million worth of plastic packaging is used annually for hangers, polybags, zippers, and bubble wrap in garment shipments. As EU buyers tighten environmental requirements, a gradual shift to recycled plastic (rPET) packaging has started, which is becoming a growth driver for the recycling industry.
02
COVID-19 impact
The pandemic created mixed effects in 2020: (1) Positive effect—demand rose for medical PPE (gowns, masks, gloves), hygiene products (hand-sanitizer containers), and food packaging. (2) Negative effect—construction slowdown reduced demand for pipe and building-material plastics. (3) Falling resin prices from $800 to $650/ton for PP improved cost pressure. Domestic demand still showed modest growth overall.
03
Export opportunities for Korean firms
(1) Plastic resins: PP, PET, PS, ABS in a $200M import base. (2) Molds: injection molds and blow molds where Korean mold technology is perceived as higher precision than peers. (3) Injection machines: electrically driven and hydraulic presses. (4) Recycling equipment: PET grinders, washing lines, pelletizing systems. (5) Masterbatches: pigments, stabilizers, and additive compounds. (6) Packaging printers: gravure and flexo printing solutions.
04
Outlook
(1) Per-capita consumption is expected to rise from 5kg to 10kg within a decade. (2) PVC pipe demand may grow 20% annually under continued construction and infrastructure investment. (3) Strict plastic-bag regulation is likely to accelerate conversion to nonwoven and recycled alternatives. (4) RFL's planned PET recycling plant of about $100M scale is setting a benchmark. (5) Bangladesh's first integrated petrochemical complex in Chattogram is expected to improve raw-material self-sufficiency over time.

Bangladesh's plastic industry remains an underdeveloped market measured at only 5kg per capita in annual consumption, indicating substantial room for domestic expansion. Given dependence on imported raw materials at 95%, the country represents a relatively stable export opportunity for Korean petrochemical firms, with additional potential in molds, injection molding machines, and recycling equipment where technical quality remains a differentiator.
