Electricity Distribution Modernization Overview

The Electricity Distribution modernization program is upgrading the aging distribution networks in Bangladesh's Chattogram and Sylhet regions. The project is commissioned by BSEB, the Bangladesh power utility, and regional distribution companies, with a clear focus on reducing distribution losses and improving supply quality.

Distribution losses in Bangladesh remain in the 10 to 15 percent range, significantly above the 3 to 5 percent observed in developed systems. The project targets a reduction to 7 percent or below through transformer and line replacement, distribution automation, and AMI deployment.

Exporting distribution equipment at scale, including over 5,000 transformers and 3,000km+ of distribution lines, along with switchgear, breakers, and arresters. Korean transformer and component makers are aligned with international quality standards, and large volumes can support competitive pricing.

AMI and Smart Metering Systems
Exporting 500,000+ smart meters and full AMI infrastructure. Korean utility smart meter roll-out know-how for 20 million households can be leveraged as a reference model, with packages including communication modules (RF, PLC, LTE).

Building distribution automation with DAS and SCADA to enable automated fault isolation and restoration. Korean automation technology can help reduce outage duration and improve restoration times.

Participating in design and installation across 3,000km+ of lines and 25 substations. Korean design standards and construction quality controls can improve network life-cycle performance and system stability.
