Case 15: VPHI Potential Buyer Discovery

VPHI (Vietnam-Philippines Health Innovation), a manufacturer and exporter of medical devices including diagnostic equipment and patient monitoring systems, asked KOTRA Dhaka to identify potential buyers as part of its Bangladesh market entry effort. Bangladesh's medical device market is expanding at roughly 18% annually, driven by public healthcare infrastructure investment and the growth of private hospitals, while demand for Korean-made medical equipment continues to rise.

Research Methodology

01
Market segmentation and target setting
Medical device buyers in Bangladesh can be divided into four groups: specialist importers and distributors, procurement teams at general hospitals, project agents for medical equipment, and suppliers participating in public tenders. Because VPHI products such as diagnostic equipment and patient monitors are mainly used by mid-sized and large hospitals, the first target group was importers and distributors with verified hospital supply experience.
02
Buyer candidate extraction
The team extracted 45 candidates from DGDA medical device import approval data, the KOTRA buyer database, and exhibitor lists from the MEDITEX Dhaka medical device exhibition. Companies with import records under HS 9018 for medical instruments and HS 9027 for analytical equipment were screened first.
03
Phone and email verification
Among the 45 candidates, 35 were successfully contacted. The review checked product categories handled, major hospital clients, annual sales scale, prior experience with Korean-made medical devices, and interest in VPHI products. Twenty-five firms expressed clear interest in diagnostic equipment and monitoring systems.
04
Site visits and final selection
The top 16 companies by scale and capability were visited from the 25 interested firms. The verification covered offices and showrooms, current brand portfolios, service and after-sales support capacity, and interviews with management and purchasing personnel. Particular weight was given to after-sales capability such as in-house engineers and spare-parts inventory, which is critical for medical device partnerships.

Case 15 shows how buyer discovery in the medical device sector must reflect the industry's regulatory and service requirements, particularly DGDA approval and after-sales support capacity. The project narrowed 45 candidates to 16 validated buyers and advanced the process to seven meetings and four product demonstrations. Given the market's rapid growth and heavy dependence on imports, Bangladesh remains a promising destination for Korean medical device suppliers seeking practical entry channels.
